Scottish Championships June 2002

posted by Roy R Sinclair - 26 Jun 2002

Last weekend, Inverness Rowing Club achieved outstanding success at the Scottish Rowing Championships at the National Rowing Centre at Strathclyde Park in winning Gold medals in five separate events over the two day regatta.
On the Saturday, current Scottish Champions Brian Bell and Tom Baker produced their best form in defeating rivals St Andrew Boat Club by three lengths in the final of the Mens Veteran C Coxless Pairs event. Shortly afterwards they combined with Iain Morton , James McLardy and Suzanne Hunter (cox) to lift a second Gold medal in the Mens Veteran C Coxed Fours event where they recorded a two length win over another crew from St Andrew Boat Club.

Other Inverness crews performed well in later events on the Saturday with Iain Morton and Roy Sinclair combining well in third place in the final of the Mens Veteran D Coxless Pairs and Alan Sinclair who just missed out on a medal by three seconds in the Schoolboys Under 16 Single Sculls.
On Sunday, both Iain Morton and Alastair Duff had resounding wins in their respective finals of Mens Veteran C and B Single Sculls, Morton producing one of the most exciting finishes of the championships in winning his race from Ken Brown of Glasgow Rowing Club. Dick Ruane, James McLardy and Roy Sinclair took part in the Mens Veteran D to G Single Sculls, Ruane finishing a close second behind Internationist Willie Brown (Stirling Rowing Club) with McLardy in third place.

Ruane later had a highly exciting race in Mens Veteran D to F Double Sculls in company with Roy Sinclair when despite the choppy conditions came a close second behind the winning crew from Glasgow Rowing Club. The other, younger Veteran B Double Scullers Duff and McLardy however achieved a convincing three lengths win over fancied opponents Munro and Diamond from Clydesdale Rowing Club. Alan Sinclair raced in Mens Junior Quadruple Sculls in a George Watsons /Inverness composite crew finishing second behind another Watsons crew and later narrowly missed third place in the Mens Junior Under 16 Single Sculls.

Another Inverness club member Ruth Hobson from Munlochy also won three Gold Medals as a member of Aberdeen University Boat Club's successful Womens Intermediate 2 Eights, Womens Novice Eights and Womens Novice Coxed Fours.
The Inverness Womens Novice Coxed Four of Ann-Marie Bexley, Angela MacKenzie, Nicola Forbes, Sharon MacKenzie (stroke) and Kimberley le Brocq (cox) performed very well in their first regatta and will undoubtedly gain from this significant experience in future competitions.
