The weekend started off with a long bus/ferry journey on Thursday leaving from Strathclyde Country Park at 12 noon and arriving in Cork, Ireland at roughly 2 am the following morning. The long journey was followed by a Friday rest day, which consisted of a short outing on the spectacular Regatta Lake and an early night at the hotel.

The Saturday an early departure from the hotel for the team was necessary to allow for the weigh-in of the lightweight crews, 2 hours before their event.
The weather proved most forecasts wrong and was a generally sunny and sometimes very hot day with only the odd gentle shower. The wind was to be a tail wind down the course, making for very fast times.

The junior doubles race involving Inverness Rowing Club's, Alan Sinclair and Glasgow Rowing Club's Jonathan Stevenson, proved to be a challenging one. The experienced Nottingham Rowing Club double representing England were looking very strong after their comfortable victory in the National Championships the week before and unsurprisingly took an early lead which they held throughout the race. Both Welsh and Irish crews were also very competent and their longer time training in the boat together, showed over the Scottish double and in the middle/end part of the race they were the more composed crews. Scotland made a great effort as a fairly scratch crew never giving up, always digging and finishing strongly but missed out on a medal position.

The team moral for Scotland was very good and crews who had just finished their races were almost immediately up cheering their fellow competitors on to a team total of two victories and several good second placed finishes in very exciting and close racing.
All in all, the Scottish team produced very encouraging results making for a most satisfactory and enjoyable weekend for all concerned.
