Home International Regatta

posted by Roy R Sinclair - 24 Jul 2005

At the Home International Regatta in Cardiff, Team Scotland finished third overall in the senior mens, senior womens and junior mens matches. The Scottish junior women had a terrific match, to finish equal on points with England and only lost out on the overall title on count-back, following a late disqualification of the Irish boat in the very first event.

During a day of terrific racing, with many close results over the Cardiff Bay 1500m course, Scotland had three wins in Womens Junior Coxless and Coxed Fours, and Mens Lightweight Doubles Sculls and second places in Womens Lightweight Coxless Pairs, Womens Junior Single Sculls , Mens Junior Double Sculls, Womens Coxed Fours, Womens Junior Quadruple Sculls and Mens Quadruple Sculls.

In the Mens Coxed Four event, Iarla Lewis, Alan Sinclair (Inverness Rowing Club), Ross Cruikshank, Colin Williamson (stroke) and Maedhbh Boyle (cox) - representing Scotland - had a most exciting race with a mere six seconds separating all four crews as they crossed the finishing line, with the verdict going to the English crew which won the UK National Championships the previous weekend.

Also taking place at Cardiff over the weekend were the European University Student Association Championships with the finals being raced on the Sunday where crews from Glasgow University, Strathclyde University and Glasgow Caledonian University reached finals. Imogen Walsh, daughter of Inverness Rowing Club President Paddy Walsh was a member of the Glasgow University Womens Lightweight Coxless Four which took part in this event.
