FISA World Masters Regatta

posted by Roy R Sinclair - 12 Sep 2005

Inverness Rowing Club travelled to Strathclyde Park near Hamilton with twenty athletes plus several supporters as part of a strong Scottish contingent for the 32nd FISA World Masters Regatta held on the eight lane championship course on Strathclyde Loch from 8th to 11th September.

Three of the Inverness athletes achieved the ultimate success as Gold Medallists. Hazel Smith won Veteran C Double Sculls partnered with Ailie Ord (Clydesdale ARC), winning by a convincing two length margin, whilst Mandy Towrie and Susanne Standish - Hunter had an outstanding one length win in Veteran C Quadruple Sculls partnered by Ailie Ord and Alison Hulme (St Andrew BC).

Former Inverness member John Poland, now rowing for Greenbank Falmouth Rowing Club, won both Veteran D and Veteran E Single Sculls and achieved a fine win in Mixed Veteran C Double Sculls.

Other high placings were achieved by Tom Baker with a second place in Veteran D Single Sculls, Mandy Towrie, Susanne Standish - Hunter, Hazel Smith and Ailie Ord with second place in Veteran C Coxed Fours, Neil Wallace and his Dutch sculling partner with a second place in Mixed Veteran B Double Sculls and Maeve Lewis with third place in Veteran B Single Sculls.

All in all, a most satisfactory performance by all Inverness athletes, particularly those less experienced competitors who achieved many personal best performances in their very first international regatta.
