This weekend sees another two days of hectic activity on the Caledonian Canal for Inverness Rowing Club.
On Saturday, the club is assisting again in the organization of the second national squad time trial in 8 weeks when approximately 100 male and female athletes take to the water over the excellent 5k stretch of water from Dochgarroch to Tomnahurich in their efforts to impress the national selectors. Racing this time in two divisions (with 11.30am and 1.30pm start times), athletes from throughout Scotland with some from south of the border and from Ireland will be aiming to better their times from the earlier GB time trial held in October in their bids for national team selection for next season's international regattas.
On Sunday, the club's own closed single sculling event is being raced for the very first time for the Allan Garraway Sculling Trophy over the 500 metre sprint course on the straight to the north of the Tomnahurich Swing Bridge. This trophy has been generously presented by one of the club's senior members for annual single sculling competition and it is unique in that all single sculling members of the club (both male and female) are eligible to take part. An accurate system of fair handicapping is to be applied so that the various ages and abilities of competing members will result in close head to head racing over the course. Racing is due to commence at approximately 11am and some keen competition is expected.
