Inverness Rowing Club again achieved success at the two day Scottish Championship Regatta at Strathclyde Park in Hamilton last weekend in fine, dry generally blustery conditions in winning four events - Mens Veteran Double Sculls, Womens Veteran Coxed Fours, Veteran Double Sculls and Womens Novice Coxed Quadruple Sculls.
On Saturday, the Womens Veteran Coxed Four of Doreen Waterson (bow),Carolyn Ward, Hazel Smith, Susanne Standish-Hunter (stroke) and Meghan Hunter (cox) recording a most satisfying win over two crews from Aberdeen Boat Club. Also on Saturday the Womens Novice Double Scull of Hazel Geddes and Carole Wells thoroughly earned their silver medals after being beaten in their final by a mere 3 feet by St Andrews University Boat Club.
Sunday's wins were recorded by the Womens Veteran Double Scull of Susanne Standish-Hunter and Mandy Towrie (stroke) who held off the strong challenge of the Inverness/ Strathclyde Park crew of Ailie Ord and Hazel Smith to win by one and one half lengths. Mandy's husband Tom Baker teamed up with Alastair Duff in the Mens Veteran Double Sculls to overhaul the award of a 26 second handicap allowance given to the slightly older St Andrew Boat Club crew to win by half a length in one of the most exciting finishes of the regatta.
The other gold medals were well won by the Womens Novice Coxed Quadruple Scull of Hazel Geddes (bow), Carole Wells, Bea Wallace, Doreen Waterson (stroke), Susanne Standish-Hunter (cox) which held off strong challenges from Heriot Watt University Boat Club to win by just over one length.
Other club members performed with distinction, earning a significant number of high place finishes, and in particular, special mention must be made of the determination of the Cadet Under 12 squad of Sarah Cameron, Rachael Wells, Meghan Hunter, Shaun Hunter and Adam Geddes which achieved several excellent second place finishes in the difficult windy conditions.
