Aberdeen Sprint Regatta

posted by Roy Sinclair - 27 Aug 2007

Inverness Rowing Club members achieved success on the River Dee at last Sunday's Aberdeen Sprint Regatta.
In the Junior 12 Coxed quadruple Sculls, the Inverness crew of Sarah Cameron (bow), Jennifer Warwick, Rachael Wells, Meghan Hunter (stroke) and Shaun Hunter (cox) had a convincing win over a crew from Aberdeen Schools Rowing Association.
The difficult windy conditions affected steering in the other Junior 12 events in which brother and sister Shaun and Meghan Hunter were narrowly beaten in their double sculls event. Meanwhile, Meghan and Rachael Wells had a good win in their Womens Junior 12 double sculls semi-final but were just pipped in the final by a crew from Castle Semple Rowing Club which had earlier beaten the Inverness crew of Sarah Cameron and Jennifer Warwick in the other semi-final.
John Sharkey was the club's other representative in the Mens Veteran single sculls in which he produced one of the closest finishes of the day but just missed first place by a mere 1.1 seconds against Richard Matheson of Aberdeen Boat Club.

Next week sees the departure of three Inverness members who are to take part in the World Masters Regatta in Zagreb, Croatia. Susanne Standish-Hunter, Hazel Smith and Hazel Geddes are due to compete in a variety of sculling, coxless pairs, fours and eights events against crews from throughout the rowing world at what is generally regarded as the largest three day regatta on the planet.
