Aberdeen North East Regatta - 9th and 10th May
posted by Roy Sinclair - 12 May 2009
Inverness Rowing Club had a significant number of crews competing at last
weekend's Aberdeen North East Regatta on the River Dee,
achieving success in three events as well as being involved in a number of
very close finishes.
In the variable weather conditions on Saturday, the Womens veteran double
sculls crew of Hazel Smith and Katie Van Exan convincingly won both their
semi-final and final races against crews representing Aberdeen Boat Club
whilst in the final of the Womens novice double sculls, Van Exan combined with
Alison Robertson to contest an extremely close race to miss out on the win by
a mere 3 feet to a crew from Dundee University Boat Club.
Sunday saw fairer conditions which resulted in Inverness wins in Womens
veteran coxed fours with Caroline Keith (bow), Katie Van Exan, Hazel Geddes,
Hazel Smith (stroke) and Jonny Harvey (cox) recording a fine three length win
over an Aberdeen Boat Club crew. Also posting a sound four length win over a
crew from Aberdeen in Mens veteran double sculls was the Inverness crew of
Alastair Duff and Tom Baker. Many other close finishes were recorded on Sunday
by Inverness crews including one of the closest finishes of the day when the
Mens veteran coxed four lost out by a mere 0.5 second to another Aberdeen Boat
Club crew.
Next Saturday sees a small contingent of Inverness members taking part in a
variety of veteran and senior events at the popular Clydesdale ARC regatta on
the River Clyde at Glasgow Green.
