NORTH ROWERS SUCCESS AT NATIONAL ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS of GREAT BRITAIN

posted by Roy Sinclair - 21 Jul 2009

Last weekend the GB National Rowing Championships took place at the Holme Pierrepoint rowing lake at Nottingham.

Current Scottish champions in both womens junior 14 and junior 15 coxed quadruple sculls, Inverness members Meghan Hunter from Dingwall and Rachael Wells from Inverness won bronze in the final of the womens junior 14 event at Nottingham in a composite crew with Castle Semple's Catlin Horsburgh, Emma McDonald and Emma Brander in the cox's seat. After winning their heat and qualifying from second place in their semi final, the crew challenged in fine style all the way down the 2000 metre course in Saturday's final to claim the first ever medals won by an Inverness crew at the National Championships.

On Sunday, Imogen Walsh claimed both gold and silver medals with an outstanding performance in the lightweight single scull for her gold and achieved her silver medal in the stroke seat of the Clyde ARC/Glasgow University BC/Glasgow RC/Aberdeen University BC/Edinburgh University BC composite crew in the womens eights event. Ross-shire oarsman Alan Sinclair also had a successful championship, winning three gold medals. Success was achieved in coxed and coxless fours and in a highly exciting and nail biting last event of the day in which his Leander eights crew snatched gold from Molesey Boat Club by a margin of just under half a length.

Next Saturday, junior and senior teams from Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales contest the various event categories at the Home Countries International regatta, this year being staged in Nottingham. Imogen Walsh, as the only representative from Inverness, will race in both the lightweight single sculls and will be in the stroke seat of the Scottish eight at this important annual regatta.
