Inverness Rowing Club achieved success in winning several gold medals and many
other good performances at the two day Strathclyde Park Regatta in Hamilton
last weekend in relatively calm and occasionally blustery weather conditions.
On Saturday, a number of fine performances were achieved by Inverness crews in
various events. In the Womens Junior 16 quadruple sculls, Eileen Mackenzie,
Rozy Shepherd, Meghan Hunter and Caitlin Horsburgh (Castle Semple RC) had a
convincing win in the club's recently acquired new Stampfli boat. Earlier
in the day Meghan and Caitlin sculled well into the tricky headwind conditions
to a fine three lengths win in the Womens Junior 15 double sculls, whilst Rozy
and Eileen did extremely well to claim a third placed finish in the Womens
Junior 16 double sculls. The club had two entrants in the Womens Veteran
single sculls event where Suanne Standish-Hunter sculled well to secure a
second placed finish followed closely behind by Mary Clouston in third
place.
On Sunday, John Sharkey and Dave Rothwell raced well in the late afternoon
downpour in the Mens Veteran coxless pairs event and narrowly missed out on a
gold medal by just under two lengths against the winning crew for Aberdeen
BC.
Two expatriate club members now resident in Glasgow also achieved success in
the regatta. Imogen Walsh (Clyde RC) sculled to gold in the Womens Open single
sculls and stroked both the winning Open double sculls and Open quadruple
sculls crews, whilst Colin Sinclair, rowing for Strathclyde University, won a
silver medal for his performance in the Scottish Universities Championships
Mens second single sculls event.
The next main season regattas at which Inverness athletes will be competing
will be the Clydesdale Regatta in Glasgow on 8th May followed by the North
East Regatta which takes place on the River Dee in Aberdeen on 15th/16th May.
