NORTH ROWERS CHASE MEDALS AT THE BRITISH ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Last weekend from 16th to 18th July, the British Rowing Championships took
place in variable weather conditions on the multi-lane international rowing
course at Strathclyde Park near Hamilton where the Inverness Club took part in
a variety of junior and senior events, achieving gold medal success in the
men's double sculls event and many creditable performances in other
events.
Current Scottish champions in womens junior 16 quadruple sculls, Inverness
members Meghan Hunter, Rozy Shepherd and Kirsty Guild from Dingwall and Eilean
Mackenzie from Inverness qualified for the final of this event via the
repechage, just missing out on a medal following a gutsy performance in the
blustery conditions on the Saturday. Meghan and Caitlin Horsburgh from Castle
Semple Rowing Club qualified for the semi-final of the women's junior 15
double sculls with a fine performance in the time trial but were affected by
the stormy weather conditions in the semi-final, finishing in fourth place and
just missing out on a place in the final of this event. Rachael Wells sculled
strongly in the women's junior 15 single sculls event and qualified for
the final via the repechage, where she was unlucky to miss out on a medal.
Ross-shire oarsmen Colin Sinclair and his elder brother Alan competed in
sculling events. Colin raced well but without success in the under 23 single
sculls event whilst Alan won his heat in the men's single sculls event
but missed out on a medal in a tight blanket finish in the final. However, in
the double sculls event with Dave Bell, his former club mate from Leander
Club, success in their heat led to a winning burst in the final on Sunday,
recording a fine three lengths win for their gold medal. Clyde ARC member and
current Scottish single sculling champion Imogen Walsh from Inverness, was
unable to race in the women's lightweight single sculls event due to GB
Squad commitments south of the border.
