Strathclyde Park Regatta - 23rd/24th April 2011 - and Come & Try Rowing at Inverness Rowing Club

Inverness Rowing Club achieved success in winning one set of gold medals and
produced many other good performances at the two day Strathclyde Park Regatta
in Hamilton last weekend in variable weather conditions.
In the damp conditions on Saturday, Hazel Geddes and Hazel Smith were unlucky
to miss out on a win in the Veteran coxless pairs which was won by a crew from
Aberdeen Boat Club. In their composite crew with the winners of their
previous race, the Inverness/Aberdeen combination sculled well in the Veteran
B/C quadruple sculls event but were unable to catch the winning composite crew
from Clydesdale ARC/Clyde RC.
In the sunny but gusty conditions on the Sunday, the Inverness Veteran D
coxless pair of Dave Rothwell and John Sharkey rowed well to lead their
Aberdeen Boat Club opponents by over two lengths at the half way mark and
maintained that advantage to the finishing line to claim their gold medals.
John Sharkey later raced in the Veteran D single sculls event to claim a solid
third placed finish just holding off the fast finishing Ron Wallace from
Aberdeen Boat Club.
In his Veteran F/G single sculls event, Black Isler Roy Sinclair split his two
Nithsdale RC opponents with Gordon Kerr winning his gold medal with the
Inverness sculler in second place position. Earlier that day, both Kerr and
Sinclair were joined by Tom Hewitt (Strathclyde Park RC) and John Munro (St
Andrew BC) in the Veteran C/E quadruple sculls event and were narrowly beaten
to the line by a fast finishing crew from Tyne United RC
Rowing in the colours of Glasgow RC, young Colin Sinclair from Belmaduthy
claimed two fine second place finishes in Restricted 1 single sculls on the
Saturday and in Restricted 1 double sculls on the Sunday.
With no Scottish regatta events taking place this coming Saturday 30th April,
the Inverness club will host an introductory 'Come & Try' event
at the club's boathouse on the banks of the Caledonian Canal near
Tomnahurich Bridge. A full programme of activities is planned with two
introductory sessions, one starting at 10am and another at 2pm to allow
interested participants to learn more about, and to sample the delights and
enjoyment of the sport of rowing. Anyone interested is encouraged to come
along to take part and to email - comeandtry@invernessrowingclub.org.uk -
in advance to provide the coaching staff with an indication of numbers for
planning and programming purposes. A complimentary lunchtime barbeque is also
planned to sustain those attending and taking part that day.
