Three athletes with Inverness connections raced at the Metropolitan Regatta on
the 2012 Olympic regatta course at Dorney Lake in Eton on 2nd and 3rd June.
Competing in Leander Club colours, Alan Sinclair in company with his crewmate
John Collins raced in the Elite Double Sculls events on both days winning the
Saturday event in a time of 7 minutes 12.27 seconds, 15 seconds ahead of the
second placed crew whilst in the wet conditions on the Sunday produced an
outstanding result in winning by a margin of 35 seconds over the second placed
crew in a fast time of 7 minutes 01.15 seconds.
Fellow Leander Club member Jamie Fraser-MacKenzie from Zimbabwe (whose family
have longstanding connections with the Inverness area and in particular
Bunchrew House) raced in Elite Quadruple Sculls events on both days with his
crew recording fine wins by comfortable margins against stiff opposition from
other clubs.
Martha Kelly (daughter of Inverness Club President Paddy Walsh) raced in crews
representing Vesta Rowing Club, recording an excellent 9 second win in
Women's Senior Eights on the Sunday and was also in three crews which
recorded good results in several Women's Coxless Fours events.
Meanwhile, Martha's sister Imogen, who was a member of the Gold Medal
winning GB Women's Lightweight Quadruple Sculls crew at the 2011 World
Rowing Championships, is expected to be included in the GB team which is to
compete in the World Cup Regatta in Munich from 15th to 17th June.
Next weekend, Inverness crews will be competing in a variety of events at the
Scottish Rowing Championships which take place over two days on the 2000 metre
eight lane international regatta course at Strathclyde Park near Hamilton.
