2012 Round Up - Captains Log! - from Hazel Smith

posted by Roy Sinclair - 3 Dec 2012, 7:33 a.m.

It hardly seems possible that the 4s head is over and Christmas is just around the corner. I thought that I'd take the chance to bring everyone up to date with both what's happened and what's on in the next couple of months.

IVs and Small Boats Head

Firstly a big thank you to everyone for all your help and support on the weekend of 17th and 18th November to enable the event to go as smoothly as it did. This is becoming one of the biggest rowing events on the Scottish Rowing Calendar and is a massive fund raiser for the club. Without the help and support from all it could not have happened. We had record numbers of crews taking part which stretched our resources and ingenuity but on the4 whole we experienced surprisingly few difficulties. A small group of members have met since the regatta to review how we might streamline things in the future and will present our suggestions to the committee on the 3rd of December.

Although there are still a number of costs to be worked out and people to be paid we hope to have made a significant amount of money for the club.

The event also was the first opportunity to present the newly struck medals - which I think are quite splendid ( but I am slightly biased).

Finally a small number of members were able to take part on what were near perfect conditions. The Mens Vet 4+ did not win but did take part ( and that's what counts I'm told). Mary and Sally were uncontested in the Womens Vet 2x on Sunday . Rowan sculled well to win Men's novice single sculls, Tom and Alastair looked stylish and controlled crossing the finish in the Mens vet 2X to win this event but the ultimate achievement was to Dave and John who were required to spring in to action to activate Thunderbird 2 (TB2) and come to the aid of fellow competitors who decided that rowing was too easy and went for a swim.

VIIIs training

The next big event in the Inverness Rowing Calendar is the VIIIs head in February. In preparation for this we are proposing having regular outings in the VIII - on a Sunday at club time. As far as possible it will be open to all turning up on Sunday morning at 10.30.

The ultimate ambition is to have an VIII to race in February.

Christmas Row and Mulled Wine

Sunday 23rd December will be the traditional mulled wine mince pies and oh yes a row - hope to see everyone there - usual Sunday start time of 10.30 for the row.

Christmas Party and Awards Dinner

Saturday 8th December is the date for the Christmas party and awards which will be held at the Clachnaharry Inn - 7.30 for 8pm. Nominees for the awards will be announced on the night. Please let Hazel Smith know if you want to come and the numbers - ASAP B)
