Outstanding performance at Castle Semple Regatta - Saturday 1st June
posted by Roy Sinclair - 27 Jun 2013, 8:26 a.m.
Castle Semple Regatta on June 1st produced the best Inverness RC performances
of the season. Three crews won gold, six crews took second places, and another
three came third and two were fourth out of six.
The junior 15 girls' quad (Hannah Campbell, Holly Barnard, Shona Gilmour,
Maya Doughty and Meghan Hunter) set the tone with an exciting 2nd place in
their heat, later followed by an even more dramatic 2nd place finish in the
seven crew final. The junior 14 boys' double (Abel Ellis and Euan
Trommino) held their own with a strong 3rd place out of six crews, and the J13
girls' double (Ishana Graham and Bronya Johnson) also came in close third
behind St Andrew BC and well ahead of Nithsdale RC.
Joseph Wright and Angus Thomson were clear winners in the O J13 2X and Joseph
repeated his win over two scullers from Castle Semple and St Andrew BC.
Racing in their age group for the first time, the J16 junior girls (Indigo
Philip-McDade, Rachael and Bethany Irvine, Ellie Kenton and Meghan Hunter)
pulled off an excellent second place behind a very experienced George Watson
BC crew, lengths ahead of two Stirling BC crews. Indigo and Ellie followed
this performance with an impressive 3rd place out of six novice doubles,
narrowly missing qualification for the final.
Not to be outdone by their team mates, the junior boys quad gave George
Watsons College a real run for their money, finishing a close second, well up
on St Andrew BC.
In the veteran women's single, Mary Clouston led all the way over Castle
Semple Parker, for a wonderful gold medal. Joined by Sally Moore, Sasha Angus,
Rosie Arthur and cox Pippa Blackwood, the veteran women's quad pulled off
an impressive 3rd place in the six boat Novice quad final.
One of the best performances of the day came from the junior girls'
eight, which was racing in R2 category due to no Novice Eight event on offer.
Their Aberdeen BC opposition was significantly more experienced, and
expectation was therefore not very high. To everyone's surprise, the
juniors remained level for the first 250m, then ABC pulled away to a one and a
half length lead - then, approaching the last 250, the IRC crew picked up
the pace, and proceeded to close the gap steadily - achieving a quarter
length overlap on a rather astonished Aberdeen crew!
Last but not least were the J14 girls racing their first quad race. Following
an excellent start where they held 2nd for a good 300m, Ishana Graham, Bronya
Johnson, Grace Philpot, Rhiannon Hopcroft and Meghan Hunter maintained their
timing and technique to claim fourth behind SPRC, ASRA and GWC, well ahead of
GRC and CSRC.
