Last week in hot, sunny and generally calm conditions, Masters oarsmen and
oarswomen from many clubs throughout the length and breadth of Scotland took
part in a wide variety of rowing and sculling events at this year's
annual FISA World Rowing Masters Regatta held on the championship rowing
course on the Lago di Varese in the north of Italy at Varese.
A total of five masters athletes from the Inverness Rowing Club took part in
the variety of events offered with many challenging well for the top places in
their chosen events, some narrowly missing out on gold medals.
Hazel Smith, Hazel Geddes and Susanne Standish-Hunter along with members from
Llandaff Rowing Club in Wales and Belfast Boat Club in Ireland raced well in
category C and D women's events for double and quadruple sculls, coxed
and coxless fours and eights, achieving some fine results in those events. In
the men's events for single, double and quadruple sculls, Tom Baker and
Roy Sinclair with support from members of other Scots clubs in the four man
event also produced determined performances but were just off the pace to
achieve gold medal positions.
In the mixed events on a blustery Sunday morning, Inverness members produced
outstanding performances in double and quadruple sculls events to bring a most
enjoyable regatta to a successful conclusion. :)
