Joseph Wright of Inverness Rowing Club performed exceptionally well at the Scottish Indoor Champs in Glasgow on Saturday 6th December, winning the boys’ J14 gold medal very convincingly by a significant margin over nine competitors from Aberdeen Schools Rowing Association, Loch Lomond, Castle Semple and St Andrew Boat Clubs.
Junior girls Heather Gordon and Eve Macleay competed in the girls’ J14 event over four minutes, and claimed 6th and 8th places respectively from a field of 10 competitors. Angus Thomson, another Inverness junior rower, pushed through his own pain barrier to achieve 5th place out of eleven in the J15 boys’ event, and Bronya Johnson achieved 8th place out of 10 in the J15 girls’ event, competing over 5 minutes.
Following their individual events, the Inverness RC juniors joined up with Castle Semple members to contest the age group relays.
Heather Gordon and Eve Macleay, together with Kirsty McArthur and Natalie Miller competed in the Girls’ J14 Relay over 1000m and narrowly missed 3rd place by only 0.2 of a second.
Joseph Wright and Angus Thomson formed a composite relay team with Ruairidh Smith and Manuel Clark and proved to be a strong combination in the Boys’ J16 Relay over 2000m – grabbing second place only 7 seconds behind Aberdeen Schools Rowing Association.
Bronya Johnson also competed for Fortrose Academy in the Scottish Schools Indoor Champs on Friday 5th December where she achieved a personal best distance of 1182m for five minutes in the S4 Girls’ event.
