Inverness Rowing Club strikes Gold at the Scottish Rowing Championships 2015

Inverness Rowing Club won three decisive gold medals and one silver at the Scottish Rowing Championships at Strathclyde Park last weekend. Angus Thomson of Inverness Royal Academy with partner Harvey Buchanan of Nithsdale RC led the Open J15 Double Sculls race from start to finish. On Sunday the boys teamed up with Ruaridh Smith and Louise Miller of Castle Semple RC to claim silver in the Open J15 Quadruple Sculls.
Heather Gordon, also of Inverness Royal Academy, was determined to hold on to her unbeaten Girls' J14 1X record this season and she did so with open water to spare. She is now the Scottish W J14 Singles Champion! Racing in the W J14 Double with Ishana Graham of Culloden Academy, the girls won their heat, then finished third in the Final.
Bethany Irvine of Millburn Academy and Hannah Campbell of Nairn Academy raced in the Women's Coxless Pair Time Trial and CD semi-final with an ultimate placing of 4th in Final C. Jane Patterson and Flora Wharton of Glasgow University BC contested the Lightweight Coxless Pair and finished sixth in Final B.
Three Inverness single scullers entered the Women's 1X Time Trial on Saturday – Jane Patterson in Lightweight, Bethany Irvine in J18 and Catherine Ellis of Forres Academy in Novice. By the end of the day Patterson won the D Final, Irvine took 5th in the same Final and Ellis finished second in the H Final.
In combination with Glasgow RC and Clydesdale RC, Inverness senior women Carla Madigan, Hazel Geddes, Hazel Smith and Katie van Exan claimed a four length victory over Aberdeen BC in the Women's Veteran Eights. Novice IRC women, Gemma Beaton, Laura Evans-Smith, Carla Madigan and Catherine Ellis won their Novice Quad heat but found a large crab in the Loch and were only able to finish 4th in the Final. Beaton and Evans-Smith were strong contenders in the Novice Double, where they qualified for the final and finished third overall.
21 Inverness junior rowers from Fortrose, Inverness Royal, Millburn, Culloden, Nairn, Forres and Gordonstoun Academies all raced well in a variety of quads, fours, doubles, pairs and singles.
The Scottish Rowing Championships caters for all categories of rowers with over 700 participants ranging in age from 11 to 71. With competitors aiming to win places in both Scottish squads as well as those hoping to progress onto team GB it offers a high level of competition across the two days.
Meanwhile on Lake Varese in northern Italy this coming weekend, Inverness members and current European Champions Imogen Walsh and Alan Sinclair are part of a strong GB rowing team which contests the second World Rowing Cup with Imogen racing in the women’s lightweight double sculls event whilst Alan races in the men’s heavyweight coxless fours event.
