Castle Semple Regatta - Saturday 12th May 2018

Three juniors from IRC made the trip to Castle Semple Regatta at the weekend and enjoyed racing in perfect calm, sunny conditions.
In the Open Novice Single event, Fraser Wallace was one of 20 entrants. He won his heat comfortably and then came 2nd in his semi-final. In a closely contested final, Fraser crossed the line in 4th place.
In the Women’s Open Single, Sara Johnston came 3rd in a straight final. She also finished in 3rd place in the final of the Women’s J18 Single. Sara then partnered with Robyn Patton of St Andrew Boat Club for the Women’s J18 Double event. In a very tight race with a crew from Loch Lomond, Sara and Robyn came 1st, winning the only medal of the day for IRC.
Fraser was in action again in the afternoon, this time with Alex Todd in the J18 Double. In another close race, the boys finished in 3rd place. Alex went on to compete in the J18 Single event. He rowed strongly in his heat with a 2nd place finish, securing a place in the final. Half an hour later, he was back at the start for the final. Against strong opposition, Alex finished in 5th place out of 6.
Alex had to jump out of his single scull and straight into a boat with Sara to race in the ‘A’ Final of the Mixed R1 Double. Despite being exhausted from his single event, Alex responded to the ‘gentle encouragement’ from his partner and together they produced a strong final 250m almost catching the crew from George Watson’s College in 3rd and beating 2 other crews across the line.

Scottish Rowing Junior Training Day - Sunday 13th May

Sara was back at Castle Semple Rowing Club on Sunday, joined by Heather Gordon and 12 other top junior rowers for a training day organised by Scottish Rowing. Coached by Junior Co-ordinator, Mike Martin and Head of Performance Pathway, Lee Boucher, Sara and Heather were in a coxed 4 with Anna Colley and Izzy Martin (Glasgow Schools) and Ailish Lurring (George Heriot’s School).
The girls had 2 outings, the first being a technical session which was followed in the second session by some timed pieces. Conditions were excellent once again and the crew looked sharp. It is hoped that the girls will get to race in this crew at the Scottish Champs on 10th June before travelling to Henley Women’s regatta to race on 22nd June.

Many thanks to Fiona Johnston for Results Report and to Fiona and Ian Hunter for transporting the boats last weekend
