On Saturday and Sunday, 16th and 17th February, a significant entry of crews from Scottish clubs, schools and universities took part in the JBT Inverness Winter Heads in bright and sometimes blustery weather conditions on the superb rowing waters of the Caledonian Canal in Inverness. Much excellent racing was witnessed over the 4.35 kilometre course in two exciting days of competition.
Host club members from Inverness Rowing Club achieved significant success in winning two events, open veteran coxed fours and open veteran double sculls whilst other members performed with distinction over the two days of competition.
The fastest time in the open eights event was recorded by an Edinburgh University BC crew in a fine time of 14 minutes 4 seconds, whilst the fastest time in the women’s eights event was recorded by a women’s crew from the same university in 15 minutes 25 seconds.
In quads events, Edinburgh University BC were the fastest men’s crew recording a time of 14 minutes 19 seconds whilst a J18 crew from Glasgow Academy were the fastest women’s crew posting a time of 16 minutes 48 seconds. Fastest crews in four’s events were recorded by the men from Edinburgh University BC in a time of 15 minutes 53 seconds and the women’s crew from Aberdeen University BC/Robert Gordon University BC in a time of 17 minutes 7 seconds.
In coxless pair’s events, fastest men’s crew came from Aberdeen University BC/Robert Gordon University BC in 17 minutes 1 second whilst a crew from Aberdeen University BC was the fastest women’s crew in a time of 18 minutes 47 seconds. In double sculls events, the fastest men’s crew came from Edinburgh University BC in a time of 15 minutes 33 seconds with a crew from Aberdeen University BC/Robert Gordon University BC achieving the distinction of fastest women’s crew in a time of 18 minutes 21 seconds. An Edinburgh University BC member was the fastest men’s single sculler recording a time of 16 minutes 40 seconds with Robert Gordon University BC providing the fastest women’s single sculler in a time of 20 minutes 27 seconds.
The Scottish Students Head events took place on both days. Some fine competitive performances were achieved with honours being shared fairly evenly between the university crews taking part.
